Our National Games by Gerard Humphreys is a compelling political drama about the Arms Crisis of 1970.
Originally staged at Axis in 2008 and shortlisted for the Stewart Parker Trust Award, the play explores the Arms Crisis of 1970, when careers were ruined and members of the Government were charged in court. At the centre of the crisis was Captain James Kelly and the real-life events that led to one of the most turbulent political scandals in modern Irish history.
As part of Axis’s 25th anniversary celebrations, this event features a staged reading of scenes from the original play, directed by former Axis Artistic Director Ray Yeates, with Michael Judd, Marcus Lamb, Jed Murray, Céire O’Donoghue and Simon Keogh.
The reading will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Ray Yeates, featuring actor Stephen Rea, former MEP Patricia McKenna and playwright Gerard Humphreys. The panel will explore the events behind the play and its creation.
A look back at a significant piece of Axis history and a story about politics, power, loyalty and ideals. A story where everyone had an opinion.
