Axis turns 25!
A message from Axis Director, Sorcha Keane
This year marks 25 years since Axis first opened its doors. In 2001, the Ballymun community worked together to advocate for an arts and community centre right at the heart of Ballymun. Axis wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the vision, passion, hard work and dedication of those community members and artists, and everyone who has come through our doors since 2001.
Axis is many things to many people. It’s the kids in our creche, and the artists performing on our stage. It’s the parents collecting their kids from ballet classes, the audiences arriving for a show in the theatre. It’s a great night out; it’s a safe welcoming space; it’s a place to be creative, it’s a hub of community. Whether you’re a 4 year old seeing a play for the first time, or a 64 year old performing with the THREADS dance troupe for the 14th time - Axis is for you!
We hope you’ll join us in celebrating 25 years of Axis - we’ll be announcing anniversary events throughout the year. Keep an eye on this space and our socials, or drop in to us to find out what’s going on. Here’s to the next 25 years of Axis Ballymun - bígí linn!
The Axis Logo:
A Story of Community & Collaboration
Language Studios & Axis Ballymun
It's always a nice full circle moment when collaborations come back around! 25 years ago in 2001, Language, a Dublin-based design studio, were commissioned to develop an identity for the brand-new Axis Ballymun.
Designers from Language had the idea to involve the community in the process, and they asked a group of young people to contribute. There was a great response from the workshop and an image of stacked chairs was chosen to develop further into a logo. We felt this image reflected the essence of a collective energy, connectivity and integration within the community.
We were delighted to work with Language on our 25th anniversary logo. Having worked closely with the community on our initial logo 25 years ago, it was fitting to re-ignite that conversation with Language in celebration of our 25th anniversary. The result is a colourful, joyful expression of 25 years of creativity in the heart of Ballymun.
David Joyce of Language says: “It was a real pleasure to work on this project and it’s great to see how it has been so resilient over the last 25 years, a true reflection of the strength and integrity of this tightly knit community.”
