SUCKED is a new site specific theatre project for young people (15+ years) kicking off this August 2018.
A collaborative project developed and produced by axis:Ballymun and Poppintree Youth Project, supported by Dublin City Council and the Ballymun Festival Committee.
Headed up by lead artist Betty Duffy, SUCKED will theatrically explore a number hard hitting issues in young people's lives. With the support of local youth workers, Betty and a group of young people will devise and develop an original theatre piece which will be performed outdoors at a number of site specific locations throughout Ballymun in November 2018.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
The idea emerged from a conversation last year between Emma Connors (axis) and Fran Mc Veigh (Poppintree Youth Project) - talking about the realities of young people being ‘sucked’ into drug dealing. axis was keen to work on a project with PYP in 2018 anyway and we decidied that this is what we should focus on - and so, SUCKED was born. Our hope is that this new piece of theatre will explore this sensitive issue creatively and bring it to life in a theatrical way.
We want this to be a co-production (of sorts) with the wider Ballymun community - involving the Ballymun Local Drugs Task Force, local youth workers and other youth services in the area. We think it would be brilliant for us as a creative and committed community to shape and produce this piece of theatre together – considering there is much knowledge and experience among us all.
Next Monday 13th, we'll be hosting an initial ‘creative brainstorm’ with local youth workers and a number of young people to carve out some possible themes and discuss various issue/s.
